Impact Position- Do you know?

Posted on: 03-29-2010 Posted in: Golf Tips

In this video we discuss how to create the elusive impact alignments which are mandatory when it comes to consistent ball striking. Many golfers will succomb to the ‘hit impulse’ I describe in my book The Art of Compression. Once you understand where you body should be at impact it is much easier to educate your body to move in the correct sequence.

Notice where the handle of the golf clubs is at impact. You should never feel as if you are flipping the club towards the ball. Wrist angles should remain intact deep into the forward swing, and this can only happen when you have moved into the left hip to initiate the forward swing. Feel as if your feet are gripping the ground, what I call ground pressure, and that will allow you to make an explosive move left.

    Hi Rick,
I just found your website after viewing one of your videos on Youtube. I’ve been playing over 50 years but haven’t improved much since my teen years. I’m currently a USGA 7. I’ve been struggling with the proper impact position and tend to flip slightly just at the moment of impact. Also a strong tendency to swing over the top. I’ve been using video for the past couple of years which has forced me to confront my swing flaws.

By keeping my arms connected to my body and squatting slightly on the backswing to counteract my natural tendency to lose my spine tilt I’ve made improvements in the swing plane. I’ll be spending time with your drills and the points you’ve made in “The Art of Compression” to solve my flipping issues. I’ve never heard anybody talk about getting your weight into the left hip socket so I’ll work with the drills and follow my progress in the videos and on the greens.

Thanks for your excellent presentations! -Neil

      Neil,
Thanks for the compliment. Your case sounds like so many golfers who struggle to create the leverage needed to maintain the wrist angles into impact. I have written about this and have in depth details of proper sequencing in The Art of Compression. We are filming more clips to be posted soon, and will have detailed DVD’s in the near future.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have or send me a video clip and I will upload it my V1 software and evaulate your progress. Enjoy the book ! Rick

Rick. I do have another question. How long should it take to overcome the “hit impuse”? Assuming I have the time (and I do) how much time should I be spending in practice to get over it?

Mine is overpowering and I’ve been playing over 50 years. Thanks! -Neil

      Neil,
The hit impulse will begin to subside once you feel comfortable with using the pivot to move the arms..you start to use the core as the engine that runs your golf swing. It will take golfers different amounts of time. What you will also notice is that the golf ball will travel as far or farther than the swing you make when you “feel the speed”. What I mean is the power will begin to come effortless and not an out of control swipe at the ball. I can’t give you an exact answer of how long because it will take individuals different time frames to install this program into their golf swing. I can say that I have been able to teach this to students in a matter of a lesson. It does take practice like anything else to make the changes permanent.

You should spend all the time possible playing and praticing. Your focus should be using your pivot to deliver the arms into the hitting zone with the accumulators ( right elbow and wrist angle ) intact so clubhead speed will be created much deeper into the forward swing. One drill I like for feeling this is holding the golf club towards the clubhead end of the shaft and make several swings until you hear the swoosh noise of the club moving. Now try to make it swoosh on the right side of the ball, which as you know will require you to release the wrist angles much to early in the forward swing. Next I want you to swing where the swoosh is to the left side of the imaginary ball we have at the bottom of our swing. Now you will be able to feel how the right elbow and wrist angles are intact deeper into impact. When performing this drill you will notice how your pivot must engage if you are to maintain the levers of the elbow and wrist. Let me know how it feels to you !
